iPhone 4 Reception Issue: Apple offers free bumpers
Apple Inc. will give free protective cases to Apple iPhone 4 users to tackle so-called death grip problem. Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced on Friday that free case or bumbers will be given to the iphone users to fix the antenna's design flaw problem. In a press conference at the company's headquarters in Cupertino, Calif, Jobs promised a full refund will be issued to those who already bought the $29 case.
According to Steve jobs all smart phones including the iPhone have weak spots. He emphasized that only 0.55%of all iPhone users have contacted Apple with a reception issue and the iOS4 4.0.1 update fixes the antenna bar and the Exchange bug. Steve Jobs claims it is not unique to iPhone4, even BlackBerry Bold 9700, HTC Droid Eris, and Samsung Omnia II can be affected by this left handed grip issue and hopes Apple will be the first company to find a solution.
The new iPhone 4 grabbed 3 million customers since its launch on June 24th 2010, and became the Apple's fastest selling product ever. In the first three days, the device got 1.7 million customers and judged as the No. 1 smart phone by many publications. Jobs claimed that it was the “Thinnest Smartphone on the planet.” The new model carries a metal antenna that surrounds the outside of the device which makes the device lighter and thinner. But within three weeks Apple got a number of complaints from users about dropped calls when they grip the lower left hand side of the phone where the antenna is located. The antenna issues are related to a hardware design flaw.
Jobs said that the return rate for the iPhone 4 to AT&T is 1.7%, or less than a third of the return rate for the iPhone 3GS.The iPhone controversy seriously affected the Apple’s shares with $16 billion loss in market value.
